Pelican Lake (18030800) is located southest from Breezy Point, Minnesota in Crow Wing County. The south shore of Pelican is about 4 miles east from Nisswa on County Road 18. Pelican Lake is one of the largest in the Brainerd Lakes area, with a surface area of 8,253 acres and a maximum depth of 104 feet.
There is a popular public swimming beach about 1.5 miles south of County Road 3. Pelican has a DNR concrete public access on the east side of Halverson Bay, and 2 County concrete public access areas, one on the west side of Nelson Bay off County Road 11 and the other on the west side of Jones Bay on southwest side of lake. There is an earthen public access on the south end of the lake off County Road 118.
Pelican Lake has a wide variety of fishing available including black crappie, bluegill, bowfin (dogfish), brown bullhead, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed, rock bass, silver redhorse, tullibee (cisco), walleye, white sucker, yellow bullhead, yellow perch.

Pelican Lake is a developed lake located about seven miles north of Pelican Rapids. The outline of the lake is unique and resembles the shape of a pelican, hence it's name, Pelican Lake. The lake has a reputation for it's clear water and wilderness experience, with tall evergreens and pines that surround the shores along with rocks left over from the ice age that birds enjoy relaxing on.
The lake also contains over 50 islands of different shapes and sizes that are a treat to explore. The lake was once ideal for fishing, but recent discoveries have shown Pelican Lake to be infested with zebra mussels, which threatens the lake and other lakes connected by Pelican River. However, water sports and recreation are still very popular among lake-goers.

The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary is operated by the American Bear Association in Orr Minnesota. The Sanctuary is located right down the road from Pelican Lake, covering hundreds of acres of protected forest. It has been described as the best place to see wild black bears in their natural habitat. There is a safe observation deck available for guests visiting the Sanctuary, to view and take pictures of the bears in their natural states.
Another interesting place to visit in Orr, Minnesota is the Orr Bog Walk which features a half-mile long boardwalk surface that provides easy access to stroll through a variety of wetland types. With each different type of wetland, spruce bog, ash swamp, cattail marsh, and tamarack swamp, guests can find different special plants and wildlife animals. Along the Pelican River, otters, eagles, pelicans, osprey, muskrats, and other animals can be spotted.
The Pelican Lake and Orr area sponsor Voyageurs National Park. The National Park is a huge water-based park that is located on the United States/Canada border and has over 340 square miles of navigable waters for boating, canoeing, and kayaking.
Voyageurs National Park is definitely a must-see for those visiting Pelican Lake and nearby area. For visitors who arrive without a boat, the park offers canoe programs and tour boat programs that run from June through August. Otherwise, resorts in the nearby communities also have boat rental possibilities.
